After Spiritpact, this was a welcome change. The first thing to know is that Episode 1 contains an Episode 0 as well to explain a bit of the background. It started off quite confusing with mysterious words flickering across the screen at every instance but as a murder mystery style show I think that’s something you’ve got to expect at the outset. It was compelling to continue watching and quite interesting. The premise of the prequel was to set up the events that had caused an earthquake to happen six years ago and gave the sense that the world was not all it seemed. There was an odd concept of “awakening” which I still don’t understand but I’m not sure how much that actually matters.
I don’t think you need to watch the prequel before watching the first episode but it does help to establish the series of murders that happened before the earthquake so the parallels are easier. Small things like the phone charm or the same detective woman wouldn’t be as obvious without watching the prequel but I think you could get by without it. Regardless, the series concentrates on Takuru Miyashiro; an orphan who is president of the newspaper club. In this episode we were introduced to most of the cast but the episode focused on Takuru, Nono Kurusu, and Onoe Serika.
Takuru has realised that the New Generation Madness murders that happened six years ago appear to be happening again. He skipped school to visit the crime scene and took some photos and he’s convinced a third murder will be happening today – the same day as the third murder did six years ago. When Onoe finds something has happened the two of them go to investigate and stumble across a girl called Hinae and some very strange circumstances.
A hotel room that has a locked door suddenly clicks unlocked allowing the two of them to enter. A curtain is closed, the room is locked again, the curtain isn’t closed. A lot of inexplicable events happen and the episode ended on a scene that made me go want to find out what happened next!
Overall, I do recommend this from the first episode alone. It was a really nice start, very pretty to look at, and had exactly what I would expect of a mystery series. I hope it continues this great start, the only reason I dropped a star is because the prequel episode was a little too confusing until it got to the end and I realised what was going on.
