Welcome to my weekly post: Summer 2017 Anime Updates – Week 3. This is where I sum up my weekly viewing experience and thoughts on the anime season. This season I’m watching Sakura Quest, Restaurant to Another World, Gamers!, Dive!!, and Welcome to the Ballroom.
This series seems to be following the traditional from rags to riches. There doesn’t really feel anything particularly unique about it other than the sport it’s portraying.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying the series but I’m also finding it very predictable. Who didn’t expect Reiji and Ryou to ostracise Tomoki over the attention he was gaining. Coach Kayoko never really paid much attention to them at all. If anything I’m finding it odd that Tomoki hasn’t realised that, but I guess he’s caught up in his own journey.
It’s still fun, but nothing special so far.
You can watch Dive!! on Amazon Prime, or Anime Strike in the US.
Tasuku Uehara and New Game +
Somehow this show manages to surprise me. I’m very sure that for those of you who have watched a lot of similar anime it has cliches, but for me it’s quite fresh.
This week we learn more about Tasuku and his girlfriend, Aguri. It actually really surprised me finding out his history but I think Aguri surprised me more. I like that this show isn’t afraid to have girls into games but I’m waiting for them to stop being all about their guys. I want to see Karen and Aguri’s personalities outside of Tasuku and Keita. The after credits scene gave hope that we might see at least one girl very into her games more than the guys she knows and there’s still the girl that plays fighting games from the first episode.
All in all, it’s probably going to be a show that fan-services its girls in the end. The cards at the half way point and at the end just showcase that, why else would we be shown a picture of Karen in a swimsuit with a games console in her hand.
You can watch Gamers! on Crunchyroll.
Restaurant to Another World
Spaghetti with Meat Sauce / Chocolate Parfait
I really like watching this show even if nothing seems to happen. But at the same time I’m getting a little bored with the same story arc being told again and again and again.
Every week so far we’ve been shown one, or two, new people finding the restaurant. Sometime they stumble upon it, sometimes they’re brought with family, sometimes they’re coming back after having visited a long time ago. In the after credits scenes we see them back again but I’m waiting for something to happen.
I think I can handle another episode of introduction but I really hope it goes somewhere soon.
You can watch Restaurant to Another World on Crunchyroll.
The Harlequin on the Pond
This cour of Sakura Quest is so much better than the first! My recommendation for this show keeps getting stronger and stronger as this cour airs.
I’m loving the characters and how it’s become more than “here’s a new idea lets go” and turned into something that’s happening organically. At the same time I can appreciate why it had to happen in the first half of the series. Without their trial and errors they wouldn’t have come to care for the town in the way they have.
I loved how this week we learnt so much more about the inventor Doku, Ririko’s grandmother Chitose, and Ushimatsu Kadota. It was lovely to see who they used to be and why things have changed for them. You can really start to appreciate why Chitose treated Ririko the way she did to begin with and how Chitose has changed. At the same time you can see why Ushimatsu cares so much about the tourism board.
You can watch Sakura Quest on Crunchyroll.
Welcome to the Ballroom
I was waiting for this episode all weekend and finally got to watch it on Monday lunch time. I felt a bit disappointed to be honest.
The episode opened up to the most uncomfortable few minutes I’ve experienced while watching anime. It was totally unnecessary and I felt appalled that this was how the episode opened up. There were two women in this episode and both of them were unnecessarily fan serviced! If we can forget the boob physics accompanying Karen’s introduction and the sexy shot of Shizuku changing, then this episode wasn’t too bad.
The dancing was where this episode shined once again but it was badly tainted with their depiction of the female characters.
You can watch Welcome to the Ballroom on Amazon Prime, or Anime Strike in the US.
Stand Out Episode
Out of all the episodes this week, Gamers! was the one that surprised me the most and therefore it’s my stand out episode.
I really expected this series to go in a completely different direction. Although I might not be 100% happy with its female characters, even those that some depth to them rather than just the one facet. I hope they explore their female characters more, or at least introduce some that are more interested in games than guys, but it’s still proving to be a fun series.
