Welcome to my weekly post: Summer 2017 Anime Updates – Week 2. This is where I sum up my weekly viewing experience and thoughts on the anime season. This season I’m watching Sakura Quest, Restaurant to Another World, Gamers!, Dive!!, and Welcome to the Ballroom.
Dive!! actually got much better this week.
There was only one moment that made me roll my eyes, an element of fan-service on the female coach. But then I suppose there was equal fan-service provided on the male characters too so I don’t think it didn’t bother me too much. I think at this point I’m more attuned to noticing it on female characters but it should be something considered for the overall season review.
Last week, I thought Dive!! could be on my drop list but that’s all changed now. I really enjoyed seeing the character’s step up their game for the training their required to do. It was good knowing that they have to train rather than just having to believe in themselves, even if Tomoki has the ideal body type for this sport.
You can watch Dive!! on Amazon Prime, or Anime Strike in the US.
Keita Amano and Chapters of the Chosen
I really enjoyed this show and was surprised how good it actually was.
When hearing the premise of the show I was worried the girls who liked games would be there because their boyfriends were rather than them identifying as gamers and thankfully that wasn’t the case. They both get fan-serviced a little bit; Karen’s skirt is the subject of Keita’s attention more than once and Nina’s shirt is very revealing. However, it doesn’t detract from the show itself and appears to be more Keita’s rather believable point of view rather than the camera taking liberties for the viewer.
I’m looking forward to seeing where this show goes. It grabbed me from the start and took a turn I didn’t expect within the first episode.
You can watch Gamers! on Crunchyroll.
Restaurant to Another World
Minced Meat Cutlet / Fried Shrimp
This series is very pleasant! This episode just kind of re-emphasised the rule of the door appearing once every seven days. We were introduced to two new customers as well. I was pleasantly surprised because I half expected this episode to focus on Aletta’s first day and maybe be introduced to Kuro, the third main character. We didn’t get any of those but despite nothing really happening I enjoyed every minute of it.
I think part of what makes this series entertaining is the main chef, Tenshu. We don’t get told much about it but we’re being shown a lot. This week we were shown his compassion for the people who come into his restaurant. I really want to know about the origins of how he came to be the chef here.
You can watch Restaurant to Another World on Crunchyroll.
The Queen’s Return
Sakura Quest is turning into that show I watch every week without really knowing why. I’m interested in the characters but at the same time I could probably drop the series and not miss it at all.
I’m very tired of the two-episode arc formula as I’ve mentioned before, but I do feel as though this cour is different. We’ve still got a kind of two-episode arc going on but it’s not as blatant. For example, this episode finished off last weeks but also started the next storyline. It felt a lot more organic than the “This is our problem! This is our solution!” feel of the episodes that have gone prior.
You can watch Sakura Quest on Crunchyroll.
Welcome to the Ballroom
Episode 2 hasn’t aired yet! I believe it’s at 6 pm tonight so unfortunately week 2’s Welcome to the Ballroom will be in next week’s post. I’m quite confused at why Amazon had this time last week but what can you do!
You can watch Welcome to the Ballroom on Amazon Prime, or Anime Strike in the US.
Stand Out Episode
Dive!! defied my expectations this week. I was expected the show to be even worse than the first one and for me to be telling you that I was no longer going to continue it. Instead, this series has shot to the top of my list of series I want to watch, below only Welcome to the Ballroom.
I’m really looking forward to see where this series goes and whether any of the boys can make it to the Olympic team. I think I can guess that they will, and I think I can guess who will too but I’m unsure of if they’ll do a Yuri on Ice!!! situation and leave some of that story for another series.
