The trend I thought was set last episode was squashed this episode. I have to preface this by saying that I watch this anime at work and at times I felt thoroughly uncomfortable and quickly hoped the scene would end.
It appears as though Nono’s portrayal isn’t specific to her as this episode it was passed to someone else. It felt as though we had three moments of fan service in a show that’s been pretty devoid of it. And they’ve not just been subtle ones like the past episodes.
The first was when Takuru and Shinji were talking about the generation murders. Serika and Hana were practising self defence and Hinae was counting for them. Serika reaches an all time high and the three girls celebrate with a group hug. Takuru and Shinji pass comment that the three of them are getting on really well. This is where the scene should have ended and moved on the next part.
Instead Shinji makes reference to Takuru using his power to make the girls do more while the camera is just sat looking at Serika’s and Hinae’s skirts rise up and down in their movements. Now they wear pretty short skirts. I could have dealt with seeing the two guys watching the girls and talking about this, but hearing them talk in the background and having the camera just see this one thing made for a very uncomfortable viewing.
The next happened not long after this, the five of them have moved on and they are all discussing the murders again when Takuru makes note that anyone with powers could be next and they need to be very careful around that date. All sounds fine, doesn’t it. Until you put the camera angle with an almost upskirt shot of the girls focusing on Takuru’s face from behind them.
Why?! If there was a reason why it might not be so bad but instead it just feels so unnecessary and really sticks out like a sore thumb in what has been such a good series.
The last wasn’t so bad. There’s a scene where they’re sat in a cafe ordering things and Hana crosses her arms under her chest. As she did so her breasts became ever more pronounced in a way that draws the viewer’s attention. Once again, like Nono, something that I couldn’t find any sort of reasoning for and seemed like fan service.
Unfortunately these three things really served to pull me out of the immersion and I really struggled to enjoy this episode. The actual story developments just saved it but hopefully it gets better and stops throwing these immersion breaking moments in or it might become very difficult to make it to the end of series.
