Chaos;Child – On the Up!

Review

Firstly, I really am enjoying this series tremendously. From the title song to the colours to the drawing of the characters, everything is appealing to me and makes me want more. As for the story, it picked up from last week’s more confusing episode. This week, the newspaper club (Takuru, Serika, and Shinji) investigated the hospital mentioned two episodes prior. They wanted to find the creator of the sumo stickers and came across more than they bargained for.

The start of this episode I had to rewind and watch again as it seemed to come out of nowhere and definitely started the series off with a bang. As they investigated the hospital in an employee only area they came across the autopsy room and had to hide in the cadaver storage facility. Serika and Takuru shared one while Shinji ended up in a taken one; the next series of events confused me a bit until I realised we were seeing Takuru’s nightmare thoughts about what was happening – not actually what was happening. The key was the different colouring that changed but it wasn’t until this was repeated later on I understood exactly what had happened. Whether that’s my anime inexperience stopping me from picking that up, it’s possible, but I thought it was well done after the fact. I also appreciated the depiction of Serika in this moment. There was a moment where the camera could have exploited the view when looking out of the storage unit, but it was carefully and thoughtfully done as to not exploit Serika. Even her pleading for someone to stay with her was respectable and understandable, rather than a forced romantic appeal.

The entire episode made me feel like I was one step away from a horror film, I do have to compliment it for it’s pacing and portrayal of the psychiatric prison they were investigating. I wonder why no one questioned how Takuru knew a girl who had been there (I think it was Hinae in one of those pictures) but then they do go to the same school and Serika recognised her too so I guess that’s possible. As a viewer, we were treated to Takuru’s nightmare and memories of seeing a girl subjected to these experiments. Takuru also seems to be affected by the eleventh Rorschach so I wonder if he was also a test subject or if he was maybe the child of scientists who work their. If Nono knows something about his history, or his nightmares of being there, that would explain why she wants Takuru to drop the investigation.

I wish I didn’t have to wait for next week to carry this series on!
