I’m really not very sure where to start with this review. I’m not completely sure I’m going to enjoy this series at all from this one episode and I don’t even know where it’s troubles begin and where they end. I picked this series, originally, as it reminded me of Tales of Zestiria and Blue Exorcist with both the description and the poster, but in the end it’s nothing like that at all.
The actual exorcist guy, Tanmoku Ki, is pretty cool; he’s no a no-nonsense attitude towards everything which I really like – I just don’t have a clue why he picked the main character, You Keika, to be his spirit shadow. You Keika is the most annoying character in this after his death, before that I thought he could’ve shaped up to be someone but he’s so irritating that I kind of wish he hadn’t made the pact and would disappear (spirit’s disappear after seven days or become bad spirits).
Its treatment of female characters is another troubling aspect. Albeit only three have been introduced but one was a woman who was only focused on her career and thought herself absolutely perfect because she was beautiful, another was only interested in her love prospects, and the third was the evil spirit of the episode and a former serial killer. Another woman was introduced towards the end of the episode who also seems to be the most beautiful woman on the planet.
To be frank, I don’t have a clue where this series intends to go or even if it’s worth giving it the time to get there. If it wasn’t for the character of Tanmoku Ki I’d call this series a write off already. The visual aspects aren’t very appealing compared with my time spent with Attack on Titan and Poco’s Udon World and if the main character is supposed to be funny every time he enters a kind of bobblehead mode, well it really falls flat. There were some moments that made me smile but they were very few and far between. On top of all this, I’ve not even delved into the whole semi “slavery” mode that this pact seems to suggest…
You Keika, the heir of an old famous family of Exorcists, is stricken with poverty after losing his parents and struggles as a street fortune teller and a part time computer tech. One night at a junkyard, he meets a mysterious and charismatic Exorcist, Tanmoku Ki, who is fighting an evil spirit. To compound his misfortunes, he gets hit by car and becomes a ghost. Tanmoku Ki appears and asks You Keika to make a “pact” with him to fight Evil Spirits together. Here starts the friendship of our heroes!
You Keika, the last living member of a once prestigious exorcist family, inks out a living as a fortune teller and computer repairman. One day, he witnesses a silver-haired man fighting with an evil spirit. Bewildered by the unrealistic sight, Keika is unable to stay in hiding. On his way home after this encounter, Keika loses his life in a fatal accident and finds himself face to face with the mysterious man from earlier that evening. Calling himself, Tanmoku Ki, the man requests that Keika become his “spirit shadow”. Keika initially refuses this request but finds himself pulled into Tanmoku’s fight with the little girl spirit…
